SPECIAL EVENT: Nature Mixtape [Jessica Sarah Rinland + Mary Field]

18:30 Wed 13 Jan 2016

ICA ICA Cinema 1

LSFF is excited to present a programme of work by the little-known, pioneering British documentarian Mary Field (1896-1968) on 16mm and 35mm print. Field’s films explore British wildlife with humanising narratives, providing a unique insight into the anthropology and culture of mid-twentieth century Britain.

Inspired by Field’s visceral, often comic depictions of wildlife, we have commissioned artist filmmaker Jessica Sarah Rinland to create a new film in response to Field’s work. Rinland’s film, shot on location in the diverse natural habitats of Argentina, uses detailed text and voice-over descriptions to play with notions of sense perception and the subjectivity of the viewing experience.

The programme will comprise of approximately 100 mins of Mary Field’s work, screened on original prints, plus Jessica’s new commission and a post screening discussion about Field’s legacy of work. After the screening, LSFF’s Jo Duncombe and filmmaker Jessica Sarah Rinland will be joined in conversation by Author of Animals in Film, Jonathan Burt, scientist Richard Fortey and Patrick Russell, Senior Curator (Non-Fiction) at the BFI National Archive.

With thanks to Kate Gerova, Elhum Shakerifar and Niki Chang for their support in developing the original ideas for the programme. Programme co-curated by Jo Duncombe and Jessica Sarah Rinland.

Supported by Arts Council England.
