A night to celebrate all things film, from the super-8 styling’s of Edinburgh’s Screen Bandita, returning to LSFF for a second year, this time accompanied by a live band, to the multiple 16mm craziness of David Leister’s Kino Bingo… eyes down! We also welcome back Suitcase Cinema with the UK premiere of a powerful 16mm short.

Kino Bingo challenges your powers of visual perception… and memory.

4 reels of 16mm found footage snippets from the eclectic collection of the Kino Club archives, are simultaneously projected, so pay attention! These consist of educational, travel, and industrial films from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s occasionally peppered with rare home movie footage. All you have to do is match the cryptic clues on your Kino Bingo card with what you see the screen. Presented by your host and projectionist, David Leister.

Screen Bandita & The One Ensemble: A LIVE ROAD MOVIE IN SUPER 8 AND SOUND

Throwing caution to the wind and meandering at the grace of the landscape, this col­laboration hopscotches through Screen Bandita‘s collection of found and previously abandoned super 8 film and slides (recovered from junk shops, attics and skips) in order to dream into existence an imagined road trip that traverses land and air, negoti­ates highways and byways and skitters between movement, stillness, reflection and pure abandon. The custom- composed live score, courtesy of topsy- turvy Glasgow quartet The One Ensemble, incorporates traces of Eastern European folk and string-laced chamber psych. Suitcase Cinema present THE FLORESTINE COLLECTION (Dir. Helen Hill / Paul Gailiunas, 30 min, US 2011)

Experimental animator Helen Hill found more than 100 handmade dresses in a trash pile on one Mardi Gras day in New Orleans. She set out to make a film about the dressmaker. Helen’s films are hands-on, DIY, full of kitchen-table animation and a sense of wide-eyed joy. The film was finished after her death by Helen’s partner, and is both a document of New Orleans through Hurricane Katrina and an homage to the spirit of Helen Hill.

Lovingly projected on its original 16mm by Suitcase Cinema, and introduced by film maker Edwin Mingard.

The Suitcase Cinema  is a 16mm projection-based roving troupe, bringing the wonderment of celluloid to cafes, cinemas, galleries, back alleys and follies.
