A programme of short films reflecting life in modern India and Pakistan. Drama and documentary feature in this selection, from the rural villages of a remote India to the India of the cosmopolitan city where life isn’t always what it seems. 

We welcome some of the filmmakers to the Ritzy screening only to discuss their experiences of filming in India.

    Nine-year-old Chandi's mother is dying. When the Doctor can't help her, Chandi turns to Old Magic - the Tantrik holy-man who passes through her village each year. But the Tantrik asks a price, a terrible task for Chandi to undertake. No nine-year-old should have to make this choice...

    The Boy in the Tree is a short film about people's hopes, goals, dreams and desires and how people strive to achieve those desires under adverse circumstances. Give the world the best you have and you might get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you've got anyway.

    Munna, a taxi driver is hired to drive Maya , a sex worker to her client in city of Mumbai every night. After witnessing the realities, he unexpectedly faces up to some home truths.

    Jake Hollis 3 mins (UK, 2012)

    Kal features images captured in two Indian towns - Macleod Ganj, home to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government in exile, and the highly spiritual town of Varanasi, the most favourable place to die according to Hinduism. A reworking of a renowned sanskrit chant provides the backdrop for this film.

    Meghna Gupta 14 mins (UK, 2012)

    Unravel follows the Western worlds least wanted clothes, on a journey across Northern India, from sea to industrial interior. They get sent to Panipat, a sleepy town and the only place in the world that wants them, recycling them back into yarn.
