An evening of short films and discussion exploring the space between sleeping and waking, with a focus on the phenomena of sleep paralysis and hypnogogic hallucination. Sleep paralysis – the experience of becoming conscious during sleep while the body is paralysed, often with a crushing sensation and the sense of a presence in the room – is experienced by up to 50% of people at some point in their lives. This event will explore its scientific basis and cultural significance. 

After the screening there will be a discussion led by Professor of Psychology Chris French (Goldsmiths, University of London) and David Morgan (psychoanalyst in private practice and a Fellow of the Institute of Psychoanalysis). This recorded event is part of The Sleep Paralysis Project, a short film and cross platform research project supported by a Wellcome Trust Arts Award.
