LONDON SHORT FILM FESTIVAL OPENING NIGHT: THE PUNK SINGER

18:30 Fri 10 Jan 2014

ICA ICA Cinema 1

In association with Birds Eye View

THE PUNK SINGER (Sini Anderson, US 2012, 82 min)Kathleen Hanna fronted the early 90s Riot Grrrl band Bikini Kill and then the electronic pop perfection of Le Tigre. She became a political, confrontational legend, from DIY punk and bedroom records to the electronic pop, Hanna’s rallying rebellious cry against the sexist, hetero-normative music scene proved a source of constant encouragement to so many fans.

We kick of the 2014 London Short Film Festival with a documentary feature film that helps us define a similar ethos to what this Festival has been trying to achieve for 11 years since its birth, from London’s own DIY punk underground of film clubs and alternative cinema spaces. It also sheds a light on women’s roles within the creative industries at a time when a magnifying glass is being held up to the male dominated world of filmmaking.

We think it’s a perfect film to kick off the Festival, and a statement of intent for the 10 days ahead.

Join 2 Hot 2 Handle DJs in the bar afterwards, bringing you spunk, sass and all the tunes you want to get down to.
