NEW SHORTS #24 NORTH AMERICAN

12:30 Sat 18 Jan 2014

Curzon Soho Curzon Soho

British filmmakers head over to the American continent to give us stories and documentaries from across the country. From real life we have the story of smalltown low budget veteran trash filmmaker Phil Chambliss in Glass Eyes of Locust Bayou, and the birdhouses of America’s most wanted bird in Nature House Inc. Fiction takes us from a lonely drone-strike operator played by Ewan Bremner in Drone, to the smalltown award winning animated world of In The Air Is Christopher Grey.

  • DRONE

Daniel Jewel 12 mins (UK, 2013)

Set in the near future, DRONE follows one morning in the life of a military Drone Operator, played by EWEN BREMNER (Trainspotting and Black Hawk Down). Drone warfare has now become privatised and he works a 9 to 5 shift for a Drone company. One morning he is called in to do an 'early shift' and carry out a Drone mission on his own for the first time. Alone in the office, whilst he waits for his mission to go live he surfs the internet and plays solitaire like any other bored office worker. But his isolation makes him think for the first time about what he must do and the lethal hellfire missile he has to unleash at the touch of his joy stick on a suspect he's never seen before, thousands of miles away from him - across the other side of the world.
  • FLICKER

Bouha Kazmi 10 mins (UK, 2013)

A fragmented story of loss and self-discovery, following a vulnerable drifter girl as she treads desolate hollow ground.
  • GLASS EYES OF LOCUST BAYOU

Simon Mercer 14 mins (UK, 2013)

Arkansas-based film-maker Phil Chambliss documents his rural life through a blurred and tangled haze; his DIY films straddle fact and fiction, good and evil. In Glass Eyes of Locust Bayou, director Simon Mercer has created a mesmerising short film about a man who documents a dark and strange version of Americana. With a hypnotic soundtrack by Stan Iordanov.
  • IN THE AIR IS CHRISTOPHER GRAY

Felix Massie 9 mins (UK, 2013)

Christopher Gray has been in love with Stacey for quite some time, and no amount of lemonade can cool his desire. Meanwhile, Barry Flint has just bought his son a five-foot python from the pet store. Seemingly harmless methods of winning hearts fail and a hot summers day, without a cloud in the sky, ends with a devastating storm.
  • LITTLE SHADOW

    Toby Fell-Holden 17 mins (UK, 2013)

A teenage boy attempts to put into practice his father's conception of masculinity when left to fend for himself amongst a group of older kids.
  • NATURE HOUSE INC

Nick Jordan 6 mins (UK, 2013)

A short film which centres upon the proliferation of bird houses, erected to attract the Purple Martin - 'America's Most Wanted Bird'. The extraordinary abundance of man-made habitats reflects a desire to live in close proximity to nature, in a suburban, small town setting. Over one million North Americans have installed Purple Martin bird houses. The migratory birds, which are believed to consume large quantities of insects, are now entirely dependent upon man-made housing during their breeding season.
  • PACT

Ben Adler 7 mins (UK, 2013)

Lucy (aka Ophelia) is alone in her beautiful Paris apartment. It's her birthday. She's beautiful, she's sexy, she's young. She's getting ready for a dangerous pact she has concluded with her e-chat lover....
  • WATER'S FINE, THE

Emily Diana Ruth 24 mins (UK, 2013)

A young woman and her father travel up to the lake to visit the old family cottage after several years of family-wide estrangement. Anticipating a friendly reunion with the cousins she grew up without, the girl faces a series of disappointments in it's place.”
