We consider the marriage of sound and music in our regular epic selection of creative music videos alongside short films with a dominant musical soundtrack. There’s animation and experimental work and music from the full spectrum, from Ultramarine, London Grammar, Laura Marling, Gazelle Twin, Dan Croall, Anna Calvi, Winterfalle, and The Grand Gestures. Plus a punk rap opera from Brighton in FRONT.

  • ANTI BODY

    Chris Turner 3 mins (, 2014)

    Returning to the school shower room, Gazelle Twin appears in different incarnations as she remembers the horror of adolescence, whilst the metronome of the swinging light reveals who and what is in the darkness. The purest of elements, water and fire, seek to strip away her current façade, but without this identity she is left reaching for something unknown.

    Colour Melody is a conceptual look at a song's structure being represented by ink.Inspired by the technique of splash photography the aim of the project was to creatively break a song down via a multitude of ink colours. Every instrument has its' own colour.

Inspired by a controversial Dutch art project from 2012, animated horror comedy „Crackhouse“ depicts psychedelic suburb flooded by stern dubstep sounds.

    The video for Winterfalle’s single ‘Deadbeat’ is a darkly witty postcard flick-book of his home in Jersey. A cinematic portrait of the artist and the island shot over nine months, the visuals play off the isolation at the core of the song, capturing the people and places that serve as inspiration for Winterfalle stories.

    A deserted Essex beach is the unlikely location that brings together three wayward souls for a day trip to the seaside that they’ll never forget. Rough Trade Records commissioned this film for the reissue of Ultramarine’s 1992 album ‘Every Man And Woman Is A Star’. The band created the soundtrack from parts, moods & flavours from across the album.

Kev Wright's Punk Rap Opera stars Jamie Sives (Game of Thrones) and breakthrough rapper Holly Holsta.

    A music video that doesn’t go fast and doesn’t dazzle with bright lights, but instead aims to calm and to work with the music with its hazy watercolours washed over evolving pencil lines. The video was made as a thank you for friends who had helped me replace a stolen camera. Thank you :D

    A forest comes alive at night courtesy of some enigmatic stop frame animation of pulsating earth, lights playing amongst the trees and mysterious characters meeting. As the track escalates, string maestro Sebastien Preschoux unveils a stunning display of his art as animated strings enchant the woods emphasised by the geometric lights pulsing amongst the trees. This hand crafted and playful stop motion ballet depicts a tale of life coming and going is all orchestrated straight out of Chris Ullens' playful imagination.

    A short film inspired by the music of The Grand Gestures featuring Celie Bryne. Inspired by the song and its lyrics I wanted the film to demonstrate how living by the sea can be both stifling, grey and lonely yet beautiful, awe inspiring and hopeful; I find derelict places both stunning and intriguing in equal measure.

    Ben Aston 5 mins (, 2014)

    Hand drawn rotoscope animated music video for 'Polygonn' by the Bishops. Composed of over 2,500 individual hand-drawn illustrations, animator Nick Black spent over 6 months tracing each frame from the original live action footage onto paper in a technique called "rotoscoping" - with 12 drawings representing a second of footage.

    A weather-themed, stop motion, animated music video for ‘Soleil’ by Rob Heron and the Tea Pad Orchestra, a “North Eastern Swing” band from Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, featuring a dapper gentleman who experiences the changing seasons right in his living room.

    A dance told through colour, light and water. An abstract representation of music and a pure expression of dynamic colour and shape. Layers of paint build in a rhythmical dance to the music, peaking in a complex climax of movement, texture and colour. This is abstraction-in-motion with the aim to create an emotional experience alongside the music.
