NEW SHORTS: Bargain Basement Big Screen

19:00 Thu 14 Jan 2016

Hackney Attic

A chance to see a selection of low budget work, and meet the filmmakers in a post screening Q&A. The five films tonight show an inventiveness on a lower budget, to create longer work; includes two mock docs, on clowns and the art world respectively, plus some crazy comedies.

  • AFROBEAT(S)

Will Webb 8 mins (UK, 2015)

Three white hipsters settle down to plan their first big club happening: an Afrobeats night. But as two of them fixate on guaranteeing the attendance of at least one black person, one starts to question just how racist the whole thing is, and tries to pull out.
  • MR BEARDY ANSWERS THE PHONE

Darin Caudle 10 mins (UK, 2015)

In this cinematic love letter to Jacques Tati and the early Dadaist influenced work of Rene Clair, a mischievous red telephone kiosk lures our gentleman hero Mr Beardy into its tiny interior and engages him in a surrealist game involving a talking book, a smiling llama, Neville Chamberlain, Viet Cong propaganda and British dance music of the 1920s.
  • SEND IN THE CLOWNS

Kate Shenton 10 mins (UK, 2015)

David is an artist with one ambition in life, to dress up as a scary clown and terrorise local pedestrians. This is his story in his words.
  • THE ART BASTARD SHOW

Chris Lewort 45 mins (UK, 2015)

The Art Bastard Show follows three very different Bristol artists and an overly-ambitious curator as they fail to stage the biggest exhibition of their careers. The film takes a satirical look at those trying to negotiate their way through the fickle art world. It's a place where vegan taxidermy and stenciled vaginas clash, while concepts are wrapped in masking tape and sold to the highest bidder.
  • THE SILENT GANGSTERS

Amani Zardoe and Hatty Jones 6 mins (UK, 2015)

A female gang dealing in cosmetic surgery discover they are losing customers to a rival gang, leaving their Boss with only one course of action.
