As is tradition, we launch the 14th London Short Film Festival with our Best UK Short Film Award shortlist, sponsored by The British Council.This is a cross-section of shorts exciting us here at LSFF, with debate and discussion across the whole team, to come up with this cracking line up of UK based talent, so as we can showcase work that pushes boundaries, subtly or otherwise, with filmmakers to keep your eye on. 83 mins

    Mark Jenkin 6 mins (UK, 2016)

    “I was hungry for the coast again and took a bus down along the R675, getting off to walk a while between Annestown and Dungarvan. The cliffs are imperious here and look just like home…” A Cornishman’s travels in Ireland, through the counties of Wexford, Waterford and Cork in search of the familiar. Shot on Super 8 colour reversal film stock and produced according to the rules of the Silent Landscape Dancing Grain 13 Film Manifesto.

    Anya lives with her mother Amanda who suffers from addiction, forcing Anya into the role of carer and provider. She works for Derek, a drug dealer who wants to keep Anya and Amanda under his control. However, Anya takes matters into her own hands, with darkly comic consequences. Told entirely from Anya’s perspective, the harsh realities of her life are punctuated with moments of colour and imagination, to suggest a sense of hope and the magic of a child’s resilience to life’s difficulties.

    Reda is 26 years old. His dreams of escaping the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain El-Helweh ended in failure after three years trapped in Greece. He returned with a heroin addiction to life in a camp being torn apart by internal strife and the encroachment of war from Syria. Against all odds he decides to marry his childhood sweetheart; a love story, bittersweet as the camp itself.
  • MURDEROUS INJUSTICE

    Gavin Scott Whitfield 12 mins (UK, 2016)

    A blisteringly hot summer’s day on a housing estate. Two men, drinking all afternoon, share opinions on a resident refugee, whose pretty garden they have encouraged their children to vandalize. A misperception that the camera the refugee uses to record the vandalism is being used for more salacious purposes soon leads to a confrontation, and from that confrontation to tragic and fatal consequences.

    Anna Maguire 13 mins (UK, 2016)

    Johnna's dad talks too much, and Johnna herself lives inside her head. 'Your Mother and I' looks at the small moments that belie the larger tensions between families and generations, whilst Johnna's dad recounts all the ways he and his wife changed the world. Or so he says.
