Call it obsession, call it escapism or call it salvation, these three docs dig into three very different ways that a selection of menfolk have dedicated their lives; a lifetime of picture postcards, communication with communist extra-terrestrials and everyday life in ‘Pioneertown’. LSFF Documentary Programmer Jenny Horwell will be in conversation with filmmakers.

DEAR PETER
Scott Willis 27 mins (UK, 2016)
After discovering a large collection of handwritten postcards in a secondhand shop, filmmaker Scott Willis begins a journey to track down their owner. The messages on the postcards create a picture of unknown man called Peter. But with the collection spanning over seventy years, a reunion seems unlikely. Who was Peter? How did his life end? And what happens to us when our time is up? -
A SECOND WORLD
Oscar Hudson & Ruben Woodin-Dechamps 18 mins (UK, 2016)
An old Serbian man communicates with communist aliens whilst a series of futuristic Yugoslavian war monuments stand abandoned & crumbling across a non-existent state. Nostalgia for the unrealised & the unreal simmers in these parallel visions of Yugoslav utopia lost. -
PIONEERS
Grace Harper 27 mins (UK, 2016)
“The desert. It has to do with fantasy and dreams.” Pioneertown. Perched high atop a rocky crag, overlooking the centre of the universe. The lip of the vortex. California. This desert town was once a Hollywood film set, built to tell the world the story of the Old West. But Hollywood has long since departed and what is left is a small community, thriving in a town haunted by old cowboys. A community of characters in the healing land of the High Desert who revive and re-live the dreams of the original Pioneers of the West. This is a story of real lives in a fantasy world.
