16:30 Sat 7 Jan 2017

ICA ICA

A hot topic in 2017, as much of London is being gentrified with new flats and apartments, from Brixton to East London, and music venues such as Fabric are being forced to close. These short documentaries address what’s going on, giving voices to displaced residents, artists and musicians who are experiencing these changes first hand. The filmmakers and special guestswill be joining us for a panel discussion following the screening, to further discuss these issues, chaired by Michael Chandler, Programme Director at Cardboard Citizens (who make theatre with homeless people).

  • QUESTION-IN ART

Rocío Lira 11 mins (UK, 2016)

At a time where endless regeneration plans permeate much of the world’s urban landscape, this documentary explores the controversial phenomenon of gentrification through the perspective of artists and their artwork in London. From photographing a gentrified area to filming one’s homeless experience, these artists take on gentrification, reflecting on their resistance or even their complicity in the processes of regeneration.
  • LOUD PLACES

Mathy Tremewan and Fran Broadhurst 7 mins (UK, 2016)

Living portraits of dead music venues. A documentary capturing former music venues in their current states. We journey through a London Gym, a Parisian Restaurant and a Berlin Vaudeville Hall, exploring addresses that were once home to noise.
  • BETWEEN THE BEATS: BLACK MADONNA

Patrick Nation 28 mins (UK, 2016)

Four years ago, Marea Stamper was ready to give up. Since her early 20s she'd been determined to make it as a DJ and a producer, and after years of doggedly pursuing this goal—teaching herself to play, taking every gig she could get, moving to Chicago from her hometown in Kentucky—she was certain she had failed. But by gradually rising through the ranks as an undiluted version of herself—an outspoken, queer-identifying liberal and feminist with a habit of sweatily rocking out in the booth—Stamper AKA The Black Madonna gives the world of dance music a much-needed jolt, and her fans love her for it. This Resident Advisor documentary follows her during the summer of 2016 as she tours Europe.
  • UPROOTED

Ross Domoney 27 mins (UK, 2016)

In the middle of a rapidly changing London, a housing crisis rips through the capital eating up communities and council estates along the way. Two lives intertwine as they are forced to say goodbye to their memories.
