INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION: Houses in Motion (REPEAT)

15:00 Tue 14 Jan 2020

ICA Cinema 2

PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH frieze

Space, the physical self, and emotional states all metamorphosize in these multiform ruminations on territory, death and desire.

Fresh from Locarno, Diana Vidrașcu’s visually and sonically visceral exploration of natural phenomena masterfully combines the scientific with the mythological. Through multiple exposures of Taiwanese and Chinese street scenes, Richard Tuohy shines mesmerising light on territorial geopolitics, whilst animators Ivana Bošnjak and Thomas Johnson offer a visually sumptuous yet narratively complex look at grief and nature.

These films draw their singular pleasures from representations of transformation and transition. Programmed by Tom Grimshaw. 90’

All of the films in this programme qualify for LSFF’s Best International Short Film Award as well as, dependent on genre, our Best Documentary and Best Animation Awards.

This programme contains descriptions of violence and flashing images.

Martin Reinhart / Virgil Widrich 5 mins (AT, 2019)

tx-reverse demonstrates the latter. And how? Manifestly and also sensually: through a 360-degree-panorama recording of a movie theater filled with viewers, Babylon cinema in Berlin, by means of the tx-transform technique, which Martin Reinhart developed more than twenty years ago.
  • VOLCANO: WHAT DOES A LAKE DREAM?

Diana Vidrascu 21 mins (FR, 2019)

Volcanoes erupt from the depths of the boiling earth to the surface of the celluloid film, to create a new abstract cinematographic language.
  • IMBUED LIFE

Ivana Bosnjak / Thomas Johnson 13 mins (HR, 2019)

Imbued Life is a film about a young woman's connection with the life force of nature. She uses her talent for taxidermy to “return” the animals to their natural habitat. Her true search for the answers begins when she starts finding a roll of undeveloped film in each of the animals she treats.
  • CHINA NOT CHINA

Richard Tuohy 15 mins (AU, 2019)

Hong Kong marked 20 years since its hand over; half way through the planned 40 year 'one country, two systems' transition. Multiple exposures of street scenes distort space and place creating a fluid sense of impermanence and transition, of two states somewhere between China and not China.
  • BAMBOE

Flo Van Deuren 20 mins (BE, 2019)

Bamboo plants only bloom once, but if one does, so do all of the plants nearby. The same thing happens to a bunch of thirteen year old girls who are spending their summer days on an abandoned piece of land, overgrown by bamboo. When a mysterious man arrives on the girls property, they let go of their carefree summer one by one.
  • SANDOVAL'S BULLET

    Jean-Jacques Martinod 17 mins (EC, 2018)
