ICA Cinema 2

PRESENTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH frieze

Fantasies of young love and sublime hymnal singing all feature in this competition programme of five eclectic films navigating the ecstasy and pain wrought by living in the present tense.

In the claustrophobia of a German detention centre, Steffen Goldkamp makes time stand still as small gestures take on immense significance for its juvenile inmates, whilst Guinea-Bissau’s trans community are swept up in the perpetual motion of Eduardo Williams & Mariano Blatt’s kinetic VR poetry. Programmed by Tom Grimshaw. 84’

All of the films in this programme qualify for LSFF’s Best International Short Film Award as well as, dependent on genre, our Best Documentary and Best Animation Awards.

This programme contains depictions of domestic abuse and flashing images.

  • AFTER TWO HOURS, TEN MINUTES HAD PASSED

Steffen Goldkamp 20 mins (DE, 2019)

Time as punishment - of juvenile inmates and bodies that become heavy in prescribed spaces.
  • PARSI

Eduardo Williams / Mariano Blatt 23 mins (AR, 2018)

“No es” (It isn’t) is a cumulative poem by Mariano Blatt, which is constantly written over the course of a lifetime. The text of the poem, a list of “what seems to be but isn’t”, to which verses are added over days, months, and years, can cover anything. With this list ringing in its head, Eduardo Williams’s film finds itself in a perpetual movement through spaces and around people.
  • SURGE

Billy Roisz / Dieter Kovacic 6 mins (AT, 2019)

Something sinister is happening, something difficult to put into words. It unfolds aesthetically on a sound and image level through an ephemeral sense of dread, a staggering beauty and the extreme over-modulated deployment of contrasting pairs.
  • YUNG LEAN, PLEASE BE MY YUNG LOVE

Julia Mellen 15 mins (US, 2018)

Imaginings of a perfect date with Swedish rapper Yung Lean, whose music I have never listened to and who I have obviously never met. I know nothing about him, but still use him as my darling.
  • SYNDROME IO

Art Union Marmelade (Anastasia Braiko / Anastasia Veber / Egor Sevastyanov) 20 mins (RU, 2019)

Youth, power and thirst of love connect three characters. Each of them loves their own way. They are ready to do anything for love and their love becomes holy.
