A CONSTELLATION OF COSMIC QUEENS
15:00 Sat 19 Jan 2019
“I don’t fear blows because I am a warrior.”
In this kaleidoscopic offering of Afrofuturist short works, we’re taken into the orbits of the Cosmic Queens. Celestial happenings and speculative futures meet the spirituality and innate strength of the black women at the centre of these journeys. We follow them to the uncharted realms of the galaxy, on solo missions through space and time, traversing dreams, memories and mythical pasts. Includes Nigerian filmmaker CJ Obasi’s adaptation of Hugo Award winner Nnedi Okorafor’s short story Hello, Moto. Programmed by Qila Gill. 82’
Followed by a panel discussion with mixed-media artist/designer, archivist and organiser, Ego Ahaiwe Sowinski (Lambeth Women’s Project, YO MAMA! Housing Cooperative), filmmaker Kara Smith (winner of the Magnum Vie Magnifique short film competition), and filmmaker Karli Jai Smith (Smith Sister, Life[Anonymous], Respice Finem), and chaired by activist, educator and writer Chardine Taylor Stone.
