Part documentary, part fiction, Port Of Memory reflects on the systematic erasure, colonial violence, and ethnic cleansing of Jaffa, a thriving Palestinian city before 1948.
In 1950, the state of Israel created the Absentee’s Property Law, implemented to seize Palestinian properties. ‘Absentees’ are defined as those who fled to nearby villages during the 1947-8 massacres carried out by Zionist paramilitaries. These ‘absentees’ intended to return; they were and continue to be denied this right.
This personal work from Berlin-based Palestinian filmmaker Kamal Aljafari follows the story of the author’s family after they receive an order to evacuate their home. Guest programmed by Faye Harvey. 60’

In what is left of the city of Jaffa, a man about to lose his house contemplates his fate, whilst two women remain tied to their homes. In a nearby café an old captain sits motionless the whole day through, while another man moves restless like a fish in an aquarium. For these Palestinian characters this is a way of life, holding onto hope through their own rituals.
