Hackney Attic

We consider the marriage of sound and image in our regular epic selection of creative music videos, fashion films and dance film alongside short shorts with a dominant musical soundtrack

Tonight’s screening is split into two parts: Animation and Live Action (correct running orders available on the Hackney Attic website).

  • APPLES

    Aquelesimões 4 mins (UK, 2015)

    Nociceptors are the sensory neurons that allow us to feel pain. Apples is the chosen single from Nociceptor. Giving you a false notion of optimism through the lively drums, flowing synths and the “drunk” encouraging crowd of friends on the chorus, Apples is a song about the empty phases of life, when you drink and get high for no reason.
  • BAD VIBES

    Michael Marczweski 2 mins (UK, 2015)

    Electrical appliances tend to have a lot of built up anger towards their users. Bad Vibes features various domestic devices taking out their repressed anger issues on their owners. A blender refuses to work until someone inexplicably decides to stick his hand in it and attempt to kick start it with a flick of his finger, televisions explode, fans turn jet powered blowing sharp objects dangerously around a room and a fridge mischievously splutters out its contents a ll over the kitchen floor. The film exists in a minimally designed environment with unexpected and unsettling graphic violence.

    BROMANCE follows the three-way relationship of male acrobatic trio as they go through their day. From initial standoffishness, through handshakes, flips, take offs and landings a deeper bond between them is formed. While the three remain connected, they seamlessly transition between three distinct locations each playing a part in advancing the story through their own mood.

    The video features a young girl fighting monsters from Japanese manga throughout her school, and winning in epic style. Taichi Kimura, a Japanese director based in UK, collaborated with the most upcoming young animator from Japan, Rapparu. (Kyarypamyupamyu etc) All shot in Japan, all Japanese crew.

    Abyss X 3 mins (UK, 2015)

    L.A.S.H. is the self-produced, directed and edited music video by Greek-born producer Abyss X. Abyss X blends CGI aesthetics with the human image (her image) to create a mind bending audiovisual piece taking modern music filmmaking one step further.

    Tess Martin 5 mins (UK, 2015)

    Animated music video for Seattle band Dark Hip Falls using ink, water and gum arabic solution. It uses the theme of Rorschach tests to interpret the restless and fast-paced lyrics in their song ‘Lam2: Red Hands’.

    What Jenifer does when she's not arguing with her guy? The music is about a guy singing his relationship, wondering what his girl does when she's not fighting with him. The music video is a phantasmagoric point of view about this strange girl, Jenifer.

    Ben and Joe Dempsey 8 mins (UK, 2015)

    One Way to Osaka is a beautifully engaging story of 4-year old Yoko’s bewildering journey across Japan as she tries to find her way home. Created entirely by The Dempseys, this is a heart-felt film that is totally captivating as we see the streets of Japan through the eyes of a small child.

    A Surrealist encounter with the jewellery of Vann Kwok; a living sculpture traversed through glimpses of absurdity.

    In a bid to clear a debt with a loan shark, Martin, a recovered drug addict, agrees to lock a stranger in his spare room while they go cold turkey. As the days go on, Martin begins to suspect something far worse is at play, but his judgment is clouded by temptations to fall back into old habits.

    Eva McConnachie 4 mins (UK, 2015)

    The Bird is a collaboration between Scottish Ballet and Scottish Album of the Year Award-winner Kathryn Joseph. Directed by in-house filmmaker and graphic designer Eve McConnachie and filmed on location on a desolate Scottish beach, The Bird features Scottish Ballet dancer Sophie Laplane performing her own choreography, devised specifically to reflect the fragility and melancholy of Joseph's distinctive voice.
  • THE COLOURS IN MY HEAD

    Emily Bailey 8 mins (UK, 2015)

    The Colours In My Head is a psychedelic audiovisual journey inspired by the colours and patterns that dance beneath the eyelids on the brink of sleep. This animation was made by compositing hand painted 16mm film with long exposure photo sequences in a virtual 3D space.
  • THE VIOLET HOUR

    Katerina Athanasopoulou 3 mins (UK, 2015)

    The Violet Hour explores the transformative impact of World War I through the narrative of the tea gown, a garment worn by women whilst receiving their female friends for tea. The title of the film is taken from T.S Eliot's The Waste Land (1922) and refers to the cusp of morning to evening, known also as the golden hour.

    Jade Travers 4 mins (UK, 2015)

    An elderly woman dances like there is no tomorrow… Instantly ordinary and extraordinary as the drag of passing years tries to bring an ageless self to a physical standstill. Given the virtuosity and athleticism that youth once possessed, nostalgia and frustration battle, as inner-selves demand shapes and shifts that worldly forms can no longer quite manage.

    Too Close is a tale of 'bad days', whatever form they come in. We all struggle sometimes to see things clearly, the key is to realise we are not alone and that we may just be able to learn to appreciate those bad days for what they are, and to welcome the unique colour they add to our lives.

    'Trees and Gold’ is Will and Joe's second collaboration with singer/songwriter Samantha Whates. It’s imagery was inspired by the shadow puppet animation of Lotte Reiniger, but it’s narrative is more surreal. A blend of myths and folklore with intrusions from the modern world, with it’s own peculiar atmosphere somewhere between fairy tales and something more sinister."
  • TULIPOMANIA: BLINKS FIRST

    Cheryl Gelover & Tom Murray 3 mins (UK, 2015)

    Fractured faces assemble and reassemble, singing as Franken-instruments blast through the beats in this stop-motion collaged animation. Created from images culled from magazines and newspapers, Tulipomania: Blinks First is composed of thousands of individual collages on black construction paper, held together with over sixty rolls of tape. The music video was directed and animated by musicians/filmmakers of Tulipomania, who are based in the Philadelphia area.

    A girl wakes up at dawn on the shore by the river Thames to not understand what got her there. She struggles to solve the fragments of her memory to remember meeting her friend, but misses it. An urban mystery piece based around misunderstood love and friendship.

    Voo Circular is a revenge and abuse story of two girls that are confined in a continuos tilt. A repetition of gestures, colours and wants until they transform into each other.

    Teaming the incredible force of real, existing song-lyrics from contemporary and early 20th Century pop-music set against the highly sexualised, objectifying imagery, the question of our acceptance of tones of dialogue, pornography and the impact of popular culture are raised.

    ‘Wildless’ cascades us in time and gives a glimpse of Scotland’s past, present and future. As we lose wildlife and destroy habitats are we also in danger of losing a vital and inherent connection with the natural world? Our environment is a reflection of us. Can we re-connect and restore declining wildlife populations and wonderment?
